In our cross-country move from California to Maryland we realized midway through Arizona on I-40 that we were going to pass right by Petrified Forest and Painted Desert National Park. We had not budgeted the time for this stop, but we had fortunately gotten an early start that morning, so we took an hour to see the basic sites! We're glad we stopped. The views were interesting and amazing, but the weather was VERY windy and brisk.
