50 High Points

Connecticut - Mount Frissell (2,380') - September 12, 2024
The 3rd highpoint of the trip was Connecticut, the second of a three highpoint day (MA, CT, RI). We departed from MA's Mount Greylock and headed S toward CT. About 90 minutes later we arrived at the Mount Frissell trailhead. The parking area is small and it was full, but we found space to park across the street. The road as you approach the parking area is not paved, but the condition was excellent and passable for any vehicle. We gathered our hiking materials and set out on the trail.
The trail is gentle and enjoyable until you reach the base of Round Mountain where the terrain becomes steep and reminiscent of Mount Marcy, two days earlier. Oddly, Kyle came upon a turtle hanging out on one of the slabby rock faces. It definitely seemed out of place, but we didn't disturb it, and it wasn't there when we descended an hour later. Once you reach the top of Round Mountain you get a good view of Mount Frissell and can see where you need to go. You are always in the trees, but there are a few bald spots where you can take in some views. We descended to the saddle between Round Mountain and Mount Frissell and started up the next steep bouldery path to the top of Mount Frissell. The trail skirts the true summit and we headed S down the shoulder to find the state line where the CT highpoint exists. We found the highpoint marker another 5 or so minutes down the trail and it is on the right side. Kyle signed the register and we took the typical pictures. There is no view at this spot -- all covered in trees. But back up the trail there a clearing where you can take in some views to the S, E, and N. The weather was marvelous.
We started our descent by first visiting the true Summit of Mount Frissell where there was another register available to sign. We headed down to the saddle, back up to the top of Round Mountain, and then down through Round Mountain's steep section. The turtle had moved and the boulders and slabs were pretty sticky so we forged ahead "trusting our shoes!" We got back to our car in about 2 hours. We left the trailhead around 11:30am and arrived back to the car around 1:30pm.
We left the Mount Frissel trailhead and headed toward RI for Jerimoth Hill. Highpoint #37 was in the bag.

Yep! A bonafide turtle!
