50 High Points
 Arizona - Humphreys Peak (12,633') - October 8, 2006
Theresa, Mike, and I set out on the 12 hour drive from Monterey to Flagstaff to hike Humphreys Peak. We met up with Mike's friend Ron and all camped together Saturday night. We woke up Sunday to a bunch of clouds capping Humphreys. We decided to begin the hike and make a weather call as we got higher. We asked hikers already on their way down how the weather was higher up -- we got answers from "Glorious!" to "The wind knocked me off my feet!" But there was still no indication of thunder/lightning so we pressed on. Once we reached the saddle, the weather was a mixed bag: cold, windy, foggy, but still no thunder/lightning. About 15 minutes from the summit we heard it. We all knew what we should have done. We waited and waited, but never heard anymore thunder, so we booked it to the summit. When we arrived, there were two rangers at the summit! Hell, if they're up there, it can't be THAT bad!! But we were only up there long enough for the requisite pictures. Right as we left the summit we saw some lightning and its thunder was right after it. We scooted back down to tree line, catching up to, and passing, the rangers. Once we were back in the trees our pace slowed because a) there was less urgency and b) it began to snow/hail/sleet/graupel/rain making everything underfoot quite slippery. We just caught the final window for that day. We made it back to the parking lot after 7 hours round trip and were greeted with applause (ok, it wasn't for us, there was a wedding going on at the ski resort just across the meadow)! We camped Sunday night and woke up Monday to a snow covered Humphreys Peak!! I think we picked the last snow-free hiking day of their season.
