Gregory's Hat
I've made a hat for my nephew for Christmas. He's 12 months old now w/ very little hair and w/ winter upon us, I thought a hat was in order. Grandpa measured his head to be 18.5"

I used a very soft (and $$) alpaca wool yarn that is fairly light and thin. The brand is Alpaca with a Twist - Baby Twist. I used size US 10 (6.00 mm) circular needles (16" in length). I chose 3 basic, fairly dark colors b/c Gregory's coat is khaki: dark green, dark brown, and dark red.

Cast on 63 stitches. For a larger/smaller hat, adjust in multiples of 9.
Rounds 1-12:
odd rounds (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11) - *k1,p1 repeat from * to end
even rounds (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) - *p1,k1 repeat from * to end
Complete the first 4 rounds in a chosen color (I chose green). Complete the next 4 is a different color (brown). Complete the subsequent 4 is the last color (red). Because an odd number of stitches was casted on, the rim of the hat will appear as seed stitch, rather than ribbing.
With the last color (red), knit 21 rounds.
With the color you used 2nd for the ribbing (brown), knit 9 rounds. There will be a total of 42 rounds at this point.
Round 43: *k2tog, k7 repeat from * to end. This yields 56 stitches.
Knit 3 more rounds
Round 47: switch to your 1st color yarn (green). *k2tog, k6 repeat from * to end. This yields 49 stitches.
Knit 3 more rounds
Round 51: *k2tog, k5 repeat from * to end. This yields 42 stitches.
Knit 2 more rounds
Round 54: *k2tog, k4 repeat from * to end. This yields 35 stitches.
If you've not done so already, move from your round needles to 4 double pointed needles.
Knit 2 more rounds
Round 57: *k2tog, k3 repeat from * to end. This yields 28 stitches.
Knit 2 more rounds
Round 60: *k2tog, k2 repeat from * to end. This yields 21 stitches.
Knit 2 more rounds
Round 63: *k2tog, k1 repeat from * to end. This yields 14 stitches.
Knit 1 round
Round 65: *k2tog repeat from * to end. This yields 7 stitches.
Knit 1 round
Cut the yarn leaving a decent sized tail. Weave the tail through each of the remaining stitches using a darning needle. Slip the hat from the needles. Sew in all loose ends.
Cut 8 strands of brown yarn about 6" long. Using a crochet hook attach each strand to the top of the hat using a girth hitch (not sure what this is called in knitting, but this is how I refer to the term). This will yield 16 3" fringes coming out of the top of the hat. Add as many as you desire.
